Description

  1. MEXICAN HOJA SANTA An aromatic herb native to Mexico and Central America used to flavour sweet and savoury dishes. It is also known as yerba santa, hierba santa, eared pepper, acuyo, anisillo, momo, root beer plant and sacred pepper.
  2. UNIQUE FLAVOUR Dry Hoja Santa has a large green leaf with an unusual flavour similar to liquorice, sassafras, mint, tarragon, and eucalyptus.
  3. HOJA SANTA WRAPS Use pepperleaf leaves to wrap food before steaming, baking, grilling, or braising in order to protect it from the heat and impart additional aroma and flavor. A classic application using this technique is fish baked in hoja santa leaves.
  4. USAGE IDEAS Often used to wrap meat and fish for cooking or goat cheese for flavouring. Use it in traditional Mexican dishes like pozole and mole verde. It's delicious infused in cocktails or for flavouring custards for ice cream or panna cotta.
  5. OTHER IDEAS Briefly dip the leaves in hot water for 1-2 minutes to make them soft enough to wrap meats in. Try pairing pepperleaf with seafood, tomatoes, chilies, shrimp/prawns, chicken, eggs, Mexican cheeses, beef, chocolate, nutmeg, and/or pumpkin seeds/pepitas.
