Description

Carriage Bolts or Carriage Screws have a square neck that keeps them from turning once tightened. Use in square holes for wood-to-wood and wood-to-metal fastening. Length is measured from under the head.Galvanized steel is steel that has been coated with a thin layer of zinc. This zinc layer reacts with oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air to form zinc carbonate, which protects the underlying steel from corrosion. As a result, galvanized steel is commonly used in applications requiring rust resistance, and can be visually identified by the crystallization patterning on the surface. Galvanized steel can be welded, however, one must exercise caution around the resulting zinc fumes. Galvanized steel is suitable for high-temperature applications of up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Use at temperatures above this level will result in peeling of the zinc at the intermetallic layer. Similar to a flat-head style, the oval head style has a slightly convex top surface; it is typically used for appearance. A threaded fastener's size name includes information about the major external diameter, followed by the threads per inch, which indicates if it is coarse or fine. Coarse threads are better when working with brittle materials; they are sturdier and are easier to thread and unthread compared to fine. Coarse threading also allows for thicker coatings and platings.
