- For MIG welding dissimilar alloys like mild steel and the stainless steels, and also direct overlay on mild steel for corrosion applications; occasionally used for welding "18-8" base metals when severe corrosion conditions exist or dissimilar metals; ER309L stainless steel exhibits high strength and good toughness over a wide range of temperatures; shielding gas required, usually Argon/CO2 mix.
