- Originally descended from a band of Norman warriors by the name of de Chisholme', who fought at the side of Duke William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings in 1066, they later acquired lands in Scotland.
- They fought valiantly in the cause of the nation's freedom and independence, with Sir John de Chisholme of Berwick battling at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
- In Inverness-shire, in 1349, Robert Chisholm was appointed to the powerful post of royal constable of Castle Urquhart, on the shores of Loch Ness.
