- DOG BREEDS WITH HEREDITARY SHORTFALL: Bedlington terriers, Doberman pinschers, West Highland White terriers, Skye terriers, and Labrador retrievers, Siberian Husky, Golden Retrievers, and Dalmatians. Even if your dog is not hereditary susceptible, make sure your do not introduce excess copper into their diet from food, treats, and others.
- Why ZINC? Zinc blocks copper absorption in the small intestine. Zinc is one of the essential minerals that are supplemented for dogs and cats.. Zinc deficiencies do occur, most commonly as zinc responsive dermatosis.
- CAUSES OF EXCESS COPPER: Failure to excrete copper in the bile; Excessive copper storage. Excessive copper ingestion copper is found in trace elements in the diet; too much copper at one time can overwhelm the liver's storage capacity and cause liver damage; this isn't normally a problem, but dogs with a genetic tendency to excessive copper storage can be affected by a high copper diet
- GET TESTED: A laboratory workup will be conducted, including a chemical blood profile, a complete blood count, and a urinalysis. Work with your Vets! Dogs with this excess copper may seem completely healthy but have high liver enzymes on bloodwork, or can be obviously sick and even jaundiced .
